No matter if you prefer the sea or mountains, peaceful walks or dancing all night, history or fine dining, then there is something for you in Croatia.

In this guide we will break down all the best things to do in Croatia by region and type of activity. We will talk about all the most well known cities and islands, but also discuss some hidden gems as well.

Let’s get into it.

Things to Do in Dubrovnik

Aerial view of Dubrovnik, the harbor, town with orange roofs and the sea.

Dubrovnik is one of the best places to see in Croatia. A small town that nevertheless remains an iconic landmark for the country.

Explore Dubrovnik Old Town & Walk the City Walls

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of Dubrovnik as well, the Old Town is a must for walking tours and people who travel for history and culture in Croatia. The stone-paved Stradun Street and the narrow alleys make for a unique experience, along with the fortifications that offer panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the orange rooftops. You can see the whole town within 2 hours and for first time visitors, it’s perhaps one of the best things to do in Dubrovnik.

Take a Game of Thrones Tour

There are millions of Game of Thrones fans around the world, but only few who can claim to have visited King’s Landing itself. Take a guided tour around the key filming locations like Fort Lovrijenac, the city walls and several Old Town locations. Even non-fans will appreciate the combination of history and behind the scenes stories! Certainly one of the most fun things to do in Croatia.

Go Kayaking Around Lokrum Island

A popular outdoor activity with routes that follow the city walls and extend to Lokrum Island, a protected nature reserve. You can also swim and snorkel during the tour, especially if the weather permits it.

Things to Do in Split

A dynamic destination and key stop for everyone exploring the Dalmatian Coast. A city that blends ancient history with a lively modern atmosphere. Let’s take a closer look.

Visit Diocletian’s Palace

A must for all those visiting Split. The Diocletian’s Palace is a truly impressive Roman monument that is still being actively used today. Built in the 4th century, it’s actually an entire complex filled with homes, shops, cafes and narrow streets. If you find yourself in Split for the first time, then it’s an essential experience.

Walk Through the Old Town and Riva Promenade

If you want something a bit more relaxed, then after the Palace, take a walk through the Old Town. Enjoy the local bars, traditional restaurants and hidden courtyards. Or go right outside the Old Town and follow the Riva promenade along the waterfront. A bustling social hub, the Riva promenade is an ideal location to enjoy your evening in Split.

Go Truffle Hunting or Enjoy the Local Food

Foodies will love Split! Especially those with a knack for adventure and nature. You can join truffle hunting tours in the surrounding regions and learn more about this almost magical ingredient. These tours are often combined with wine tasting too! Alternatively, you can join a guided food tour in the city and treat yourself to the amazing Dalmatian cuisine.

Things to Do in Zadar

Zadar offers a great opportunity for a relaxed coastal city break in Croatia. An excellent stop if you are looking to slow down a bit.

Visit the Sea Organ & Sun Salutation

The Sea Organ is one of the most unique attractions in Europe. Placed on the waterfront, it uses the movement of waves to create natural but never-the-same sounds. Only a few steps away, you can find the Sun Salutation. It’s a circular installation that absorbs sunlight and lights up after sunset. You can experience both on the same day and turn it into a true highlight!

Walk Through Zadar Old Town

Zadar’s Old Town sits on a peninsula and it’s dotted with Roman ruins, medieval churches and lively squares. Here you can find the Roman Forum, St. Donatus Church and the Cathedral of St. Anastasia. The Old Town is small and compact, making it easy to view all landmarks in only a couple of hours.

Enjoy the Sunset or Use Zadar as an Island Getaway

Couples, romantics and those seeking the perfect picture will certainly love the Zadar sunset. It’s one of the most beautiful in the Adriatic coast and you can view it best from the waterfront promenade. But, if you want an escape from the city, Zadar can act as a base to explore nearby islands such as Ugljan and Dugi Otok.

Take a Day Trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park

Picturesque morning view of Plitvice National Park. A colorful spring scene of a lush green forest with a clear waterfall.

Perhaps Croatia’s most famous nature and wildlife destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Quite a few in the list, right? Well, Plitvice Lakes are known for their cascading lakes, turquoise waters and wooden walkways that let you explore the park without disturbing the local environment. A visit typically takes half a day at least or even a full day depending on the route you choose.

Things to Do in Sibenik

Sibenik sometimes lives in the shadow of larger coastal cities. Still, it's a worthy destination thanks to its historic center and close proximity to national parks.

Visit the Cathedral of St. James

Another UNESCO protected World Heritage Site, the Cathedral of St. James was built entirely out of stone during the 15th and 16th centuries. A Renaissance masterpiece that calls upon visitors to take their time walking around the exterior and seeing the detailed sculpted faces. Then, you should step inside and appreciate the simplicity and scale of it.

Explore the Old Town & Fortresses

Like Zadar, Sibenik’s Old Town is compact and atmospheric. Narrow streets, stone staircases and small but authentic squares make for a perfect walking tour. While exploring, you will certainly notice how the city steadily rises from the waterfront towards the St. Michael's, Barone and St. John’s fortresses. Excellent vantage points and ideal spots for photos.

Visit Krka National Park

Only an hour away, the Krka National Park is famous for its waterfalls, wooden walkways and lush landscapes. One of the most popular nature attractions in the country and the reason why many visit Sibenik in the first place.

Things to Do in Pula

Right in the Istria region, Pula is known for its Roman heritage and relaxed coastal lifestyle. A different perspective from more nightlife-oriented destinations like Split or Hvar.

Visit the Roman Amphitheater

Pula Arena is the city’s most iconic landmark. Well-preserved, this Roman amphitheater was built in the 1st Century AD and hosted gladiator fights and other public events. While you can’t fight in it today, you can still walk through the arena, explore the underground chambers and learn more about its history.

Explore the Old Town & Coastal Walks

Don’t limit yourself to the Amphitheater only. You can find more Roman ruins, medieval buildings and even Austro-Hungarian architecture in Pula’s Old Town. Mark these sights for a visit: the Temple of Augustus and the Arch of the Sergii. Then, if you want to change the scenery a bit, follow the coastal paths and walk near or swim in the crystal clear waters and quiet coves.

Enjoy Istrian Food & Wine

Istrian cuisine is not something to be missed! In Pula you can find fresh seafood, dishes rich in olive oil, truffles and also participate in Croatia's local food and wine tours. Restaurants here focus on regional ingredients and traditions, for an authentic Istrian experience.

Walk Along the Waterfront

An enjoyable area for a leisurely walk. Filled with cafes, restaurants and boats, it’s perfect for a relaxed stroll any time of the day. During the sunset though is the most popular, since the light reflects the colors of the city in a way that makes it truly memorable.

Discover Art Galleries or Take a Boat Trip

Rovinj has an artist’s heart and numerous small galleries showcase local artists and photographers. Or, you can take a boat trip from the harbor and view Rovinj from the water or visit nearby islands and swimming spots.

Things to Do in Rijeka

As you have seen so far, in Croatia you can combine cities, islands and a multitude of activities and experiences in just one trip. With the right Croatia travel itinerary, you won’t miss anything!

But we are not done yet. Let’s continue.

Easy to overlook, Rijeka offers a more local and authentic urban experience. It’s a city with a strong identity, historic landmarks and a lively center that make it a truly worthy destination.

Visit Trsat Castle

Nestled on a hill above the city, Trsat Castle is Rijeka’s most recognisable landmark. You will need to climb up some steps, but you will be rewarded with stunning views of the city, surrounding islands and the Kvarner Bay. Also, bonus points if you are not East European and can pronounce its name. Trsat Castle dates back to medieval times and today it also acts as a cultural venue.

Walk Through the City Center

Very walkable, Rijeka’s city center is ideal for guided tours. Korzo is the main pedestrian street and it’s lined with shops, cafes and historic buildings. Within a short distance, you can find the City Clock Tower and the Rijeka Cathedral.

Explore the Local Culture

If you are a fan of naval history or just enjoy culture, then visit the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral. Here, you can learn about the region’s seafaring past. Throughout the year, multiple cultural events take place, like exhibitions and festivals, that offer a way to experience Rijeka beyond the landmarks.

Things to Do in Zagreb

View of the Cathedral of the Assumption in Zagreb

The capital of Croatia, Zagreb is a wholly different experience from the coastal regions we explored so far. As the cultural and economic center of the country, Zagreb offers a more urban, albeit not hectic, experience.  And don’t let its population size put you off. If you are wondering “is Croatia safe”?, then Zagreb will prove to you how safe the country truly is. Zagreb is an ideal city destination for senior travel plans, so check out our website for more!

Explore Upper Town: Gradec & Kaptol

The Upper Town is the historical heart of the city. It’s divided in two main areas: Gradec and Kaptol. In this area, you can take a trip back in time and admire highlights like St. Mark’s Church with its colourful  tiled roof. Don’t forget to see the Stone Gate too, another important landmark. From Upper Town you can also enjoy elevated views over the city and snap spectacular photos.

Visit Museums & Experience Cafe Culture

Zagreb has a wide selection of museums to choose from. Or see them all if you can, why not? In case you can’t though, popular options are the Museum of Broken Relationships and the Zagreb City Museum. After sightseeing, take some time to drink a cup of coffee at an outdoor cafe and absorb the city’s atmosphere.

Relax in Parks or Take a Day Trip

Zagreb’s status as a capital doesn’t mean it’s deprived of green spaces. Maksimir Park is ideal for walking, relaxing and escaping the city hustle. If you don’t want to stray from the city center, then go to the Zrinjevac Park and take a short break. Zagreb is also a good base to launch day trips to Samobor or Medvednica Nature Park.

Things to Do in Hvar

Croatia’s most famous island, Hvar is known for its sunny climate, crystal blue waters and vibrant life. A popular stop for travelers looking for a beach holiday.

Explore Hvar Town & the Fortress Viewpoint

Hvar Town is the island’s main hub. Here, you can walk around the Old Town, the scenic harbor, squares and landmarks like St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and if you are looking for the perfect spot to view the island or take pictures, climb the Spanish Fortress (Fortica).

Experience the Nightlife or Take a Boat Tour

Hvar is a very active island, known for its nightlife, beach clubs and bars that stay open well into the night. This is true especially during the summer months, the best time to visit Croatia in general. But, if nightlife isn’t your thing, then boat tours are an excellent choice as well. You can take day trips to the Pakleni Islands or sunset cruises around the coast.

Things to Do in Makarska

Another hidden treasure of Croatia, Makarska is set between the Adriatic Sea and the slopes of Mount Biokovo. It offers striking natural scenery and beautiful beaches.

Visit Biokovo Nature Park & the Skywalk

Behind Makarska, the Biokono Nature Park is rising in stark contrast to the coast. The Biokovo Skywalk, a glass platform in the shape of a horseshoe, is suspended over the mountainside and provides breathtaking views of the Adriatic. The park is ideal for hiking, scenic drives and enjoying panoramic views.

Take a Boat Trip Along the Coast

After you are done with the mountains, climb down to the coast again and take a boat trip to the nearby islands. You can arrange for short cruises to full day excursions to Brac or Hvar. The trips usually include stops for swimming and snorkeling.

Things to Do in Porec

Porec is a small town located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula. A destination ideal for family trips in Croatia like the ones you can find in our website.

Visit the Euphrasian Basilica

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Euphrasian Basilica is Porec’s most important landmark. Dating back to the 6th Century, it is famous for its mosaics which are considered among the finest examples of Byzantine art in Europe.

Try Water Sports

Perhaps, when you are thinking of a Croatia vacation, watersports don’t come into mind. But Porec begs to differ, as it offers a wide range of water sports such as paddleboarding, kayaking and snorkeling.

Conclusion

There are so many things to do in Croatia that talking all about them in a single article is impossible. We tried our best though! We took a trip from the Dalmatian Coasts and Adriatic Islands to inland destinations and of course Zagreb, the nation’s capital. We saw that you can pack swimming, hiking, history, culture, nightlife and food in a single trip. No matter your interests or season of visit, Croatia delivers a rich mix of activities. All it takes is some good planning.
