Best Time to Visit Split Croatia: Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to visit Split is in May-June and September-October. We will get into more detail later on, but in a nutshell, these months offer a great mix of sunny and warm but pleasant weather, fewer crowds and good conditions for swimming and sightseeing. No intense heat, no peak season tourist rush, but still a fully operational tourism industry.

In this guide, we will talk about Split on a month by month basis. We will see average temperatures, What to do and key events you don’t wanna miss! You will notice that every month has something to offer, whether you visit Split in the deep winter or during the hottest months of the year.

Split enjoys a Mediterranean climate the whole year! Its summers are hot and dry and winters mild and wet. It follows the same seasonal patterns as much of the country, making spring and early autumn the best time to visit Croatia for comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds.

The highest temperatures are in June and August, reaching a peak of 35°C and lowest in January and February, where they can drop to 4°C. Snow is rare. Mid-year seasons, spring and autumn are typically warm and have a transitional feeling to them. Temperatures start to rise from March and begin to drop from September, but remain pleasant in both cases, for a couple of months still.

As far as precipitation is concerned, the wetter months are the fall and winter ones, with November being the wettest. Summer is dry with a low chance of rain as mentioned above. Overall, Split, much like Croatia, doesn’t really have a rainy season. Rains do not last long, but they can be accompanied by strong winds.

January is a generally quiet month in Split. There are still some New Year festivities going on early in the month, but later on, the city returns to its normal routine. It’s cold, but not too cold and you can take long walks and sightsee. Diocletian’s Palace, museums and historic streets will be empty, so it’s a good time to explore them without the usual summer rush. 

Cafes and restaurants are open, although they cater more to the local population, and there are concerts and performances taking place across theaters and other venues. We wouldn’t recommend swimming, unless you enjoy doing it during winter, but January is a perfect opportunity for a city break in Split! You can explore, take pictures and experience an authentic daily life. In February, the city slips in even more in its winter lull. For a little while at least, since the Split Carnival is just around the corner! For a few days the city will be full with colors, costumes and street parades, bringing life to February. Also, February is a month made for foodies, since you can warm yourself with hot and hearty Dalmatian plates at cozy konobas. Or, you can enjoy the winter landscapes and take day trips to nearby towns like Trogir. Fewer crowds make winter ideal for cultural & historical travel in Croatia, especially when exploring Diocletian’s Palace and local museums.

March is a transitional month in Split. The cold slowly subsides and temperatures begin to rise. It’s still not warm overall, but a bit more tolerable. The real wonder is elsewhere though. More specifically, in the blooming nature! Marjan Hill especially is very beautiful in March and ideal for cycling, hiking and enjoying the panoramic views over the Adriatic sea. Spring is also a great time for eco / sustainable travel in Croatia, with nature-focused experiences taking center stage. You can take guided walking tours and explore the Old Town on foot, or attend cultural exhibitions and small local events. The city starts to feel even more energetic every day, not just when special events occur, like the Carnival. The spring is fully here and temperatures keep on climbing. The days turn longer and sunnier. A perfect combination for outdoor activities and exploration. The city’s colors come back online after the winter break and it's a great period for lively photos and sightseeing. There are more frequent boat tours to Brac and Solta and cafes open their terraces. And shoulder-season months are ideal for private guided tours in Split! But most of all, April is usually the month that Easter takes place in Split! It will be on the 5th of the month for 2026, to be more precise. During Easter, you can observe traditional processions and church events, taking in the local culture and customs. May is one of the best times of the year to visit Split. Temperatures hover around 15 to 20°C and the weather is consistently warm, sunny and ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. That includes swimming as well! Beaches feel more inviting and while the seas might be somewhat cool, they are far more tolerable for many people. Boat tours, kayaking, and island excursions start in May, making it an ideal time to enjoy some of the most popular things to do in Croatia under pleasant weather conditions. And the crowds are yet to appear, so you can enjoy the city in a relative ease. The Split Spring Festival also takes place, an important cultural event for the city. 15°C / 59°F to 20°C / 77°F.

The summer season is almost here and June marks the start of it. Temperatures rise and the Adriatic warms up significantly. Most, if not all, people can now swim comfortably. Beaches become livelier and island hopping is at its best. June is a great month for sailing, swimming and enjoying Split’s outdoor lifestyle. The intense heat and tight crowds of the peak season are yet to arrive, so you can enjoy open-air concerts, festivals and vibrant cultural events without much hassle. Calm seas, long daylight hours, and outdoor activities make June ideal for family travel in Croatia.

Peak season is here and you can see it everywhere! Temperatures can be characterised as hot and the atmosphere is absolutely buzzing and energetic. Beaches are getting full, the nightlife is reaching its highpoint and the Old Town stays awake until late into the night. July also brings the Split Summer festival with it and historic locations are filled with music, performances and theater plays. At the same time, the Ultra Europe event attracts large crowds of electronic music fans from around the world! July is perfect for travelers seeking festivals, beach days and vibrant nightlife. It is also ideal for cruises in Croatia, as calm seas and long daylight hours create perfect conditions for sailing along the Dalmatian coast. If you thrive among the crowds and seek high-energy environments, then July is for you. 

21°C / 70°F to 31°C / 88°F.

August is one of the hottest and busiest months in Split. Temperatures are close to 30°C most of the day, dropping only a few degrees during night. The city operates at full capacity and there are plenty of options for beachgoers, island hoppers and party lovers. Water sports, boat parties and day trips to islands are very popular in August and cultural events don’t stop. You can even catch concerts at the Peristyle of Diocletian’s Palace or traditional folk performances in the rest of the city. But, all that energy attracts crowds, which are at their peak. August guarantees sunny weather, an amazing sea and festive climate, but it’s not suitable for those seeking quiet exploration.

20°C / 68°F to 30°C / 86°F.

When is the best time to visit Split you ask? Well, September is perfect for exploring Split alongside other best places to visit in Croatia, thanks to fewer crowds and excellent weather across the country. Temperatures are still warm, at mid-20°C and the sea is still suitable for swimming. The intense heat is gone as well, so you can enjoy your time outside much more. Food and wine festivals also take place, and you can taste Dalmatian cuisine during one of its finest moments. The city feels more relaxed, while still being fully operational. September is also especially rewarding for food & wine travel in Croatia, with wine festivals, olive harvests, and seasonal Dalmatian cuisine at its peak.

19°C / 66°F to 26°C / 79°F.

Tourist season is winding down and you can catch its last vestiges in October. Temperatures remain mild, but the warm days are getting fewer and fewer. You can still explore and move outdoors with comfort and the city is still lively enough for sightseeing and cultural activities. Autumn colors make Marjan Hill a sight to behold. Or photograph! Harvest celebrations and local food events bring out the best flavors of the local cuisine. At the same time, museums and galleries are easy to enjoy, since there are no crowds around. Some people do swim, especially when days are warmer. With mild temperatures, walkable streets, and fewer visitors, October is especially suitable for senior travel in Split.

12°C / 54°F to 21°C / 70°F.

A very quiet month. Tourist season is over, temperatures are low and rain becomes more frequent, albeit in short showers. A great time to explore museums, enjoy the local cafes and discover the city’s culinary scene through wine and olive oil tasting. Entertainment is mostly indoors, in cinemas, theaters and other venues. We don’t recommend the beach, unless you are a winter swimmer, but all in all, November offers a different perspective of Split. A more local one. This period is also well-suited for solo travel in Croatia.

10°C / 50°F to 16°C / 61°F.

December transforms Split into a festive winter destination! Temperatures are even lower than November, but walking around the city is still comfortable. Christmas markets start popping up and decorations give new life to the Riva Promenade. Advent especially features plenty of food stalls, live music and holiday events. A very charming time to visit Split. If you love walking around and admiring the festive atmosphere, then December is your month!

7°C / 45°F to 13°C / 55°F.

So, to reiterate, the best time to visit Split is May-June and September-October. These months offer the perfect balance between warmth, sunny skies, fewer crowds and a fully active city! But, that doesn’t mean that Split is not suitable for a visit the rest of the year. On the contrary, as we saw, Split is a year-round destination!
