Pyrenees Wild Trails: An 8-Day Hiking & Wildlife Escape in Southern France

Your Pyrenees hiking adventure begins at Toulouse Airport, where you will collect your rental car and set off towards the mountains. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours, gradually leaving the city behind as the scenery opens into the countryside and the first dramatic profiles of the Pyrenees. Arrive at your accommodation near Cierp and settle into the rhythm of the mountains. The rest of the day is yours to relax, breathe in the fresh alpine air and prepare for the guided hikes and wildlife encounters that await over the coming days.

Today you have the chance to get in touch with the wild aspect of the Pyrenees! The departure for the hike will take place in the small hamlet of border Melles. After a short drive on a rough track, you will meet your local guide and then set off for your hike. This 7km hike of about 4-5 hours with 500m of ascent will follow rough mountain tracks and old sheep paths across huge open spaces of silence and of landscapes of vast extent with signs of wild animals and maybe even traces of Pyrenees’ only brown bears. Local products will be served as a picnic on the way. You will hopefully be able to observe chamois as well as Griffon and Bearded Vultures.

Today, follow your guide into the heights above the Luchon Valley for a full day of hiking away from the more familiar routes. In spring and autumn, this region may reveal herds of different kinds of deer and chamois moving through the slopes. Overhead, griffon vultures are often seen circling in the thermals, while the rare bearded vulture, also known as the lammergeier, may appear in the clear mountain sky. After breakfast, leave your guest house and continue west towards the area around Saint-Lary-Soulan. The direct drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes, though the most scenic route leads through Bagneres-de-Luchon, the Col de Peyresourde and the beautiful Louron Valley. For lunch, consider stopping at a place in the area known for its mountain views and local, seasonal produce. Later, relax at Balnea thermal spa in Loudenvielle, where your itinerary includes a two-hour visit to the pools. In winter, this setting is known as a ski resort, but in the warmer months it becomes a peaceful alpine environment alive with marmots, birds of prey and high-mountain flora. Today, you hike in the beautiful Neouvielle Nature Reserve, one of the French Pyrenees most beautiful sites. It can be a gentle hike around the lakes and through the forest or a more demanding climb to the top of a peak to get a panoramic view of the Pyrenees as a long chain of mountains.

Enjoy one final breakfast in the mountains before checking out of your accommodation and beginning the drive back to Toulouse Airport.
