From Buenos Aires to Antarctica: A 19-Day Polar Trip full of Culture

On arrival in Buenos Aires you transfer to your hotel where you spend the next 3 nights. The balance of the day is free to walk through the elegant streets and to admire the magnificent Neoclassical and Art Deco buildings, as well as experiencing the vibrant culture of the area. The cobblestone streets full of shops, cafes and restaurants are a delight to wander around.

Today, you first visit the Pink House (local name for the official seat of the President and his government: Casa Rosada), followed by the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral, a neogothic construction and one of the largest in South America. You then walk through the historic streets to San Telmo, one of the bohemian and alternative areas of the city. San Telmo is known for its antique shops, art galleries and lots of street performers. You continue to La Boca, a colorful area with traditional houses and the famous stadium La Bombonera of local football team Boca Juniors, one of the most famous teams in the world. Finally, you end the day with a visit to Teatro Colón, an impressive opera house, considered one of the best in the world.

After breakfast, you shall depart to the airport to take your flight to Ushuaia, the end of the world, and the southernmost city on the planet. In the Ushuaia town, you can stroll around the coast of the city, visit the museums and enjoy the unique charm of this remote frontier town.

Embark in Ushuaia for a Antarctic Peninsula Basecamp cruise. From the pier in Ushuaia,  you will be able to hike to glaciers, camp on the Antarctic continent, kayak and zodiac cruising all guided by polar experts. On board, your polar guides will share their extensive knowledge with you about the fascinating geology and culture of Antarctica.

Today, you cross the Drake Passage, the same route that 19th century explorers took to get to the Antarctic continent. Along the way you get to see the amazing wildlife that inhabits these waters. There are always Seabirds around such as Albatrosses, Fulmars, Cape Pigeons etc and whales such as Fin Whales. The water is cold here where the Antarctic eco system meets with the subantarctic eco system. Land on the white continent at remote sites such as old whaling stations and scientific research stations.

Continuing on through the Drake Passage your search for wildlife including Wandering Albatross, Southern Fulmar, Cape Pigeons as well as numerous other species. Feel free to join the lecture platform for informative talks on the unique species that inhabit the area and its vast ocean. Take in the tremendous ocean views from the comfort of the ship.

The Antarctic Peninsula is a great starting point, with its impressive ice-towers and snowy, towering mountains. The countless islands and fjords promise to discover the very first breeding colonies of different penguin species as well as other wildlife. A unique, untouched world of ice and snow. From the comfort of your ship, you can go on Zodiac landings to get up close and personal with this special world of ice.

Experience a Zodiac Cruise in the Neumayer Channel between huge glaciers. The Channel is home to a wide variety of wildlife including Crab-Eater Seals, penguins and many species of seabirds, all set against a brilliant backdrop of huge floating icebergs. The experience is one that is likely to be etched in the memory forever and offers endless photographic opportunities.

Port Lockroy is a historic whaling station and former British research station. The scenic harbor and landing site are surrounded by towering mountains and a picturesque beach. Take a step back in time and explore the remains of the old station and then follow the Gentoo Penguins to their colonies on the nearby island.

Explore the Pléneau and Petermann Islands by kayak, navigating icy waters and towering glaciers. Experience the thrill of paddling amidst dramatic Antarctic scenery, immersing yourself in the serenity of this remote environment.

Arrive at Neko Harbor, one of the few landing sites that early 20th century explorers also found. Relax on the black sandy beach, observe the Gentoo penguins up close or go for a short hike which rewards you with spectacular views of ice-covered high mountains and big glaciers. 

Spend the day in Paradise Bay with whales and penguins around you. You can get amazing pictures of the Rojas Peak, the Bryde Peak and the Petzval Glacier. From this location you are surrounded by huge glaciers and snowcapped mountains. 

Cruise through the Errera Channel, enjoying the panoramic views of icebergs and mountains. Spot gentoo and chinstrap penguins along the shorelines and marvel at the pristine Antarctic wilderness.

Begin your return across the Drake Passage, observing familiar seabirds and reflecting on the incredible experiences of the Antarctic Peninsula. Enjoy lectures and onboard presentations to consolidate your knowledge of this unique ecosystem.

Spend a second day crossing the Drake Passage, enjoying your last moments at sea, spotting wildlife and capturing final images of the southern oceans.

Disembark in Ushuaia and transfer to your hotel for check-in. Enjoy a restful evening reflecting on your Antarctic journey in comfort.

Explore Tierra del Fuego National Park with a guided hike along the coastal path. Admire lakes, mountains and forests, followed by a gourmet lunch served in a heated dome. Continue with a serene canoeing excursion before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast you depart by flight to Buenos Aires and after hotel check-in you have the rest of the day at leisure. In the evening you visit a local restaurant for a farewell dinner with tango show. You will once again experience the unique dance of Argentina as well as the delicious local cuisine in style. 

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and transfer to the international airport for your flight home, bringing with you lasting memories of Antarctica and Argentina.
