Explore the wonders of Costa Rica on a 10-day program designed for families of all ages. Discover the natural wonders of the rainforests, explore around active and dormant volcanoes and experience the stunning beaches along the Pacific coast. Along the way, experience the rich history and culture of colonial towns, as well as the production of coffee and cacao, as well as get up close to wildlife, go birdwatching, see waterfalls and more. The program offers a variety of activities to suit every family member’s tastes and provides the perfect balance of adventure, education and relaxation. As part of this unique program, families will be able to participate in interactive educational sessions as well as hands-on activities to experience nature, wildlife and local cultures in an engaging and fun way.

Day 1 – San José: Arrival & City Orientation

On arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport you will be met by a member of staff and transferred to your hotel in San José. San José is a vibrant and bustling capital city, with many streets and areas to explore. You shall visit a few of the main attractions such as a few of the colorful plazas, the National Theatre of Costa Rica and some of the many museums. In the evening you will enjoy a family friendly dinner and then have the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 2 – San José to Rio Celeste / Bijagua de Upala

Drive to Bijagua de Upala (1 hour), at the foot of Tenorio Volcano National Park. On the way visit historical coffee plantations and enjoy a leisurely stroll around your accommodation to take in the surroundings and admire the local flora and fauna and special features of the area.

Day 3 – Rio Celeste & Waterfall Discovery

This morning, you go on a guided hike to the beautiful Rio Celeste waterfall learning about the unique volcanic and geological formations of the area. Then visit historical sites of the area to get an idea of how the local communities live in the Rainforest and how they interact with it. Spend the rest of the day at leisure to continue to explore or participate in any of the other options we have in a very family-friendly environment.

Day 4 – Boca Tapada: Rainforest & Indigenous Culture

Use this morning to explore Boca Tapada with a naturalist guide to see life in harmony with monkeys, sloths, iguanas and over 40 species of tropical birds. Learn the history and traditions of the indigenous peoples of this region and how they practice the sustainable use of the forest. If you feel like it, you can take a gentle boat trip or hike to see the wildlife up close.

Day 5 – Boca Tapada: River Exploration & Wildlife

Take an easy-going cruise on the river today. You might see crocodiles, a large variety of birds and many other animals. In between you discuss the historical and ecological relevance of the river and have plenty of time in the afternoon for some wildlife observation or a short guided trail.

Day 6 – Sarapiqui: Culinary & Coffee Heritage

Visit a local coffee plantation and experience hands-on family oriented cooking using traditional ingredients to create simple but delicious dishes. Learn the historical and current role of coffee and cacao.

Day 7 – Sarapiqui: Cacao & Horseback Tour

Walk through the cacao plantation to learn about chocolate making. Family friendly gentle horseback riding tour through the farm’s trails, wildlife and historical farm areas.

Day 8 – Pierella Ecological Garden & Turrialba

Today, you visit Pierella Ecological Garden! A 4 hour visit at this conservation center for native species of Costa Rica. A guided walk to observe the diversity of preservation of biodiversity of Costa Rica and then continue to Turrialba to visit local markets of arts and crafts, historical sites and cultural interests. Evening at leisure.

Day 9 – Turrialba to Los Santos / Savegre de Aguirre

The Talamanca highlands are your next stop. In search of native species such as the Resplendent Quetzal, learn about indigenous communities and their role in the conservation of the forests where they live. The walks are gentle and include families with children who can appreciate and take pictures of the biodiversity of the area.

Day 10 – Savegre de Aguirre to San José & Departure

Drive back to San José on a number of scenic routes that travel through coffee plantations and a number of quaint rural towns. The afternoon will be at leisure in San José for last minute shopping or sightseeing before being transferred to the Juan Santamaría International Airport for your departure.
