So you are traveling with the family and do not want to compromise on the knowledge of your trip? We have put together a 15 day independent family travel itinerary to the Galapagos and mainland Ecuador. The trip starts with an exceptional five day Galapagos vacation and then continues with a self-drive mainland road trip through some of Ecuador’s most impressive eco-systems. After having explored the Galapagos you travel back to the mainland and start your road trip in Quito. The historic center of Quito is one of the best preserved in all of South America and offers many interesting sites such as the Plaza Grande, the Cathedral, the Government Palace and the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús as well as breathtaking views of the surrounding towering volcanoes and the Equator. From Quito you continue your trip through the Andes to the edge of the Amazon rainforest and visit places such as the Papallacta thermal springs, Ahuano in the jungle, the waterfalls and canyons around Banos, the historic center of Riobamba and the beautiful colonial city of Cuenca. Returning the rental car in Guayaquil the trip then continues to the Galapagos where the pace of traveling is quite different and is characterized by the majestic volcanic landscapes and stunning beaches of the various islands, not to mention the amazing variety of creatures that call this unique place home. From the giant tortoises that roam the highlands of Santa Cruz, to the chance to snorkel with sea lions and to get up close and personal with thousands of seabirds, this is certainly a vacation that you will never forget. You will visit the volcanic island of Bartolome and its idyllic white sand beach as well as the island of Santa Fe and the laid back town of Puerto Ayora on the island of Santa Cruz. Welcome to Ecuador. After landing at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport, your private driver will meet you and the family for the transfer into the city, a scenic journey of around 45 minutes depending on traffic. Settle into your hotel and take the rest of the day at your own rhythm. You may choose to relax after your travels or step out for a first taste of Quito’s atmospheric streets, framed by mountain views and the dramatic light of the Andes.
Begin with a guided walk through Quito’s historic center, one of the best-preserved colonial districts in Latin America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore elegant plazas, admire the interiors of La Compania and La Basilica and walk along La Ronda, one of the city’s oldest and most characterful streets. Later, continue to Mitad del Mundo, where you can stand at the famous Equator line and enjoy one of Ecuador’s most iconic experiences. Return to Quito for an evening at leisure, with time to enjoy the city’s restaurants, cafes or quiet corners at your own pace.
This morning, you will be transferred from your hotel to collect your rental car, marking the start of your self-drive Ecuador family adventure. With a thoughtfully designed route and local assistance available, you can enjoy the confidence of expert planning with the freedom to explore independently. Spend the day as you wish. Stay in Quito for a relaxed day of discovery, drive north to Otavalo for its celebrated Andean market or head toward Cotopaxi National Park for volcano scenery and open highland landscapes. Return to Quito in the evening for your final night in the capital.
Your road trip begins with a beautiful drive toward Papallacta, where naturally heated thermal pools offer a soothing pause in the high Andes. It is a wonderful way to ease into the journey before the landscape begins to shift from cool mountain air to lush Amazonian greenery. After lunch, continue toward Ahuano and board a motorized canoe for the final approach to your jungle lodge. Once settled, enjoy the riverside atmosphere, perhaps with a swim, a drink on the terrace and dinner surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
Today is dedicated to the Amazon and its remarkable rhythm of life. With a local guide who knows the region intimately, your activities will be shaped around the season, conditions and interests of your group. You may walk forest trails, learn about medicinal plants, bathe in river waters, visit nearby reserves and look for wildlife in the trees and along the riverbanks. After lunch, meet members of the local community and gain insight into their traditions, relationship with the forest, and everyday way of life. Return to the lodge for a relaxed dinner in the jungle.
Enjoy a slower morning in the Amazon before setting off with the family toward the highlands once again. Along the way, stop near Banos to admire the power and beauty of Pailon del Diablo, one of Ecuador’s most impressive waterfalls. Continue to Riobamba, a traditional Andean city surrounded by mountain scenery and known for its plazas, churches and relaxed local atmosphere. After checking in, the evening is yours to explore independently and perhaps enjoy a regional meal in one of the town’s local restaurants.
Start the day with a visit to the Church of Balbanera, considered Ecuador’s first Catholic church and an important reminder of the country’s early colonial history. The journey continues to Ingapirca, Ecuador’s most significant Canari-Inca archaeological complex. Walk among stone terraces, ceremonial spaces and ancient structures while learning about the cultures that shaped this region long before the modern road connected these landscapes. In the afternoon, continue to Cuenca, one of Ecuador’s most graceful cities.
Spend the day discovering Cuenca, a city loved for its cobbled lanes, colonial architecture, flower-filled balconies and creative spirit. Walk through the UNESCO-listed historic center, visit the colorful Flower Market and see how local craftsmanship continues through ceramics, silverwork, straw weaving and traditional design. In the afternoon, explore the Museum of Aboriginal Cultures for a deeper look into pre-Columbian heritage. The evening is free to enjoy Cuenca’s dining scene, where refined restaurants and intimate local eateries make the city especially rewarding after dark for all ages.
Today’s drive takes you from the Andean highlands down toward Ecuador’s coastal plains, with changing scenery at every turn. Pass through the landscapes of El Cajas National Park, where lakes, paramo vegetation and misty mountain views create a striking farewell to the Andes. Enjoy lunch at a traditional hacienda and learn more about Ecuadorian cacao before continuing to Guayaquil, the country’s largest city and an important coastal hub. Take time to explore the riverfront Malecon before returning your rental vehicle and preparing for tomorrow’s Galapagos flight.
Leave the mainland behind and fly to the Galapagos Islands, where your guide will meet you on arrival and accompany you to Santa Cruz. The island offers a perfect introduction to the archipelago, combining volcanic terrain, coastal life and extraordinary wildlife. Visit a local ranch in the highlands to observe giant tortoises roaming freely, enjoy lunch and explore fascinating lava tunnels. You will also learn about traditional island practices such as sugarcane juice extraction and coffee preparation, with tastings included. Later, continue to Puerto Ayora for a relaxing evening by the sea.
After breakfast, set out with the family by boat to Bartolome Island, one of the most visually striking places in the Galapagos. Its volcanic tones, otherworldly terrain, and famous view over Pinnacle Rock make it a highlight for travelers who love dramatic scenery. Follow the boardwalk and climb the stairway to the viewpoint for one of the archipelago’s most iconic panoramas, looking across lava formations, turquoise water and nearby Santiago Island. Later, enjoy time near the beach, where snorkeling may reveal Galapagos penguins, white-tip reef sharks, tropical fish or curious sea lions before returning to Santa Cruz.
Today is left intentionally open, giving all of you time to enjoy Santa Cruz in your own way. Relax at your hotel, browse Puerto Ayora or plan a visit to Tortuga Bay, one of the island’s most beautiful coastal settings. Reached by a scenic trail through native vegetation, Tortuga Bay is known for its white sand, marine iguanas, sea birds and peaceful Playa Mansa, a lagoon ideal for a gentle swim or kayaking. In the evening, stroll along the waterfront and choose a local restaurant for a relaxed sunset dinner.
This morning, travel by boat to Santa Fe Island, a serene and wildlife-rich destination southeast of Santa Cruz. Its clear waters, cactus-dotted hillsides, mangroves and quiet bays create a beautiful backdrop for the day. Look for sea lions, pelicans, gulls, blue-footed boobies and reef sharks resting in the shallows. After lunch, continue to Playa Escondida, a peaceful white-sand bay where you can relax, swim and enjoy the rare sense of stillness that makes the Galapagos so special. Return to Puerto Ayora in the afternoon.
Your final full day in the Galapagos can be as relaxed or as enriching as you wish. Spend time at leisure, return to a favorite beach or visit the Charles Darwin Research Station for a closer look at the archipelago’s conservation story. At the station, learn about ongoing research, giant tortoise protection, habitat restoration and the legacy of Lonesome George, the famous last Pinta Island tortoise. It is a thoughtful way to close your Galapagos experience, connecting the beauty you have seen with the work required to protect it.
After breakfast and some extra family quality time, it is time to say goodbye to the Galapagos. You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport on Santa Cruz for your flight back to the mainland. From there, connect with your international flight home or continue onward with more travel plans, carrying with you the freedom of Ecuador’s open roads and the unforgettable wildlife encounters of the enchanted islands together with all the family.
