Galapagos in Style: Wildlife, Snorkeling & Island Life in 5-Days

On arrival at Baltra Airport you will be met by your local guide who will assist you on the ferry to Santa Cruz Island and on to Puerto Ayora on the island’s southern coast, the capital of the island and where you will spend the night. En route to Puerto Ayora you will make a short trip to the highlands to see some wild giant tortoises in their natural habitat. You will take a short walk through the very lush area where the tortoises live and, hopefully, take some great photos of these amazing creatures. You will then proceed to a local farmhouse where lunch will be served and you will have the chance to learn more about these incredible animals and their habitats. After lunch you will continue to the Charles Darwin Research Station where scientists from all corners of the globe work in collaboration with the local population to protect the unique environment of the Galapagos. Just outside the research station is the Fausto Llerena Breeding Center where you can see many species of giant tortoises and learn about the breeding, research and conservation programs in place to protect these incredible animals. The rest of the day will be spent at leisure at your hotel in Puerto Ayora, a seafront hotel.

Enjoy a leisurely morning before setting out in the afternoon on a small-boat exploration of Santa Cruz Bay. Depending on sea conditions and timing, your guide will introduce you to some of the bay’s most beautiful corners, each offering a different glimpse of Galapagos life above and below the water. You may visit La Loberia, a small islet known for its resident sea lion colony, where snorkeling can bring you close to playful sea lions, tropical fish and striking underwater rock formations. Continue toward Shark Channel, where harmless whitetip reef sharks may rest in the clear shallows, while blue-footed boobies and seabirds perch nearby. The route may also include the Canal del Amor, a calm inlet where sea turtles and colorful fish are often seen. Back on land, take a short walk through coastal scenery to observe marine iguanas in their natural habitat. Return to Puerto Ayora with the evening free to enjoy the relaxed island atmosphere, browse local shops or choose a waterfront restaurant for dinner.

One of the privileges of traveling to the Galapagos is being able to spend a day on an island, a naturalist guide at your side. Depending on National Park permits and the vessels’ daily activities, you can visit Santa Fe, South Plaza, Bartolome or North Seymour. The four islands have very different characteristics, including species and landscapes of volcanic origin. You will sail to the island in a short time and once you arrive at the lava-coast line, start walking along the marked trails of the island’s dry forest, cactus gardens and beautiful beaches. With the guide’s explanations, you will recognize the different species that live on the island and learn about the unique natural balance of the archipelago. In the afternoon, after returning to the vessel for lunch, you will spend the rest of the day in the bay with options such as swimming and snorkeling, relaxing on the beach or admiring the landscapes of the Galapagos from the shore. Late in the afternoon you will return to Puerto Ayora, tired but very happy, with the feeling of having spent a wonderful day in the wildlife of the Galapagos.

Your wildlife discovery continues with another boat excursion to a different uninhabited island, giving you a broader and richer view of the central Galapagos. The boat journey itself is part of the experience, with ocean scenery, seabirds and the possibility of marine life sightings along the way. On arrival, explore protected trails with your naturalist guide and watch for endemic species living freely in their island habitat. Depending on the destination, you may encounter magnificent frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies, land iguanas, marine iguanas, sea lions, pelicans, Darwin’s finches or other remarkable wildlife that has adapted to these isolated volcanic islands. After time on land and, where possible, in the water, return to Puerto Ayora for your final evening. Spend it slowly, perhaps with a seaside dinner, a walk along the harbor or a quiet moment reflecting on the rare encounters of the past few days.

After breakfast, your driver will meet you at the hotel for the transfer back to Baltra Airport. As you leave Santa Cruz behind, carry with you the memory of giant tortoises in the highlands, sea lions in turquoise bays, volcanic islands rising from the Pacific and wildlife found nowhere else on earth.
